A Colorado scientist and author will speak in Marine on St. Croix on October 17, sharing his observations about the importance of rivers. Dr. Kurt Fausch has taught in the Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology at Colorado State University for 35 years.
He recently published For the Love of Rivers: A Scientist’s Journey, documenting his experiences during decades of river research, emphasizing fish ecology and conservation, around the West and the world. The book was awarded the 2016 Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Award from Northland College.
The theme of the talk will be the importance of rivers for fish, plants, animals, and humans. Watch the book’s video trailer below for beautiful footage and ideas:
The St. Croix River Association and Northland College are hosting the event, which is open to the public, SCRA members and volunteers. Ticket proceeds support the St. Croix River Association’s mission to protect, restore, and celebrate the St. Croix River and its watershed.
The annual Fall Gathering will also recognize SCRA and National Park Service volunteers, and an announcement of the winner of the Centennial Paddle Challenge. The winning paddler – drawn at random from everyone who logged 200 miles on the Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway this summer for the National Park Service’s centennial – will get a Wilderness Systems 12-foot kayak.
