Sandhill cranes at sunrise on the St. Croix Islands Wildlife Area near Somerset

Thanks to Gary Noren for sharing the photos below of a beautiful morning paddling in the St. Croix Islands Wildlife Area near Somerset, Wisconsin.

In addition to being a great photographer, Gary is organizer of the St. Croix River Association’s annual photo contest (and SCRA’s board chair).

The deadline for photo contest submissions is this Friday, August 16th. Amateur photographers may submit up to five photographs in four categories: Wildlife, landscapes, close-ups and people. Persons age 18 or younger will compete in the youth age division.

Photos must be taken within the St. Croix River watershed, which includes many rivers and streams in eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Each first place winner will receive an 8”x10” Gary Alan Nelson print and a $100 cash prize. Second place winners get a $25 cash prize and third place winners will be presented SCRA caps. All winning photos will be displayed throughout the watershed during the following year.

Story of 360

One of the biggest challenges facing the St. Croix River is harmful blooms of algae in in the lower river, due to excess nutrients in runoff. The goal is to restore the river by reducing phosphorus levels to 360 tons/year. Learn more »
