Celebrate spring with Friends of Wild River and free admission to Wild River and all Minnesota State Parks! In celebration, we will be joined by special guests from La Compagnie des Hivernants de la Riviere Saint Pierre (the Company of the Winterers of the Saint Peter’s River), a group of characters that will take you back in time through their live fur trade encampment reenactment! Participants of all ages will discover the fascinating skills needed to live in the wilderness 200 years ago. Get a chance to see an authentic looking fur trade canoe, shoot a bow and arrow, touch-and-feel actual furs and trade goods, and hear vibrant stories about our region’s exciting fur trade history. Voyageurs, bourgeois, and assorted winterers await you this Seegwan at Wild River State Park!

In-Depth Geology Tour

Join Associate Professor Jim Miller from the Department of Geological Sciences at UMD, as he shares the incredible geologic history of Interstate State Park during a special tour. This two-hour-long program will walk and talk you through the unique, billion year history of the glacial potholes area within the park. Space in this special program may be limited, please call 651-465-6523 to reserve a spot. Meet at the Visitor Center. On Saturday, June 8, to celebrate National Get Outdoors Day, Minnesota’s 76 state parks and recreation areas are all offering free admission this day.

Legends of a Lumber Baron
Interstate State Park
Taylors Falls, Minnesota

Dwight Wilcox, local storyteller, will present a fun-filled evening as Mr. Martin Mower, one of the first lumber barons of the St. Croix Valley. His fascinating display of old photographs, telling of fun facts and local legends, and characterization is always an enjoyable evening for all ages. Meet at the boat landing amphitheater and bring your own camp chair if desired. In case of rain, the program will be moved to a nearby picnic shelter. On Saturday, June 8, to celebrate National Get Outdoors Day, Minnesota’s 76 state parks and recreation areas are all offering free admission this day.

Story of 360

One of the biggest challenges facing the St. Croix River is harmful blooms of algae in in the lower river, due to excess nutrients in runoff. The goal is to restore the river by reducing phosphorus levels to 360 tons/year. Learn more »
