Lower St. Croix Cooperative Plan

FEB. 12: THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

In an ever-changing social, political, and economic landscape, it is valuable to acknowledge previous efforts on the St. Croix River in order to make educated decisions for the future of our beautiful riverway. The public is invited to learn about the Lower St. Croix Cooperative Plan (2001), a collaborative effort that provided direction for the protection of the Lower St. Croix River. The public meeting will be held in Stillwater, MN at the Water Street Inn scheduled for March 2, 2016 at 7 PM.

“We held over 50 meetings over the course of three years to agree on this plan”, said Randy Thoreson, National Park Service. “Everyone was working together – right-wing, left-wing, government, non-profits, citizens – to protect the river they love for generations to come. One meeting in Stillwater had over 800 people in attendance to discuss the collaborative vision for the riverway.”

The cooperative management plan provides a framework for proactive decision making, including decisions on recreational use, land use, natural and cultural resource management, and general development in the Lower St. Croix River. At this public meeting, Randy Thoreson will summarize the process, rationale, and outcome of the cooperative plan.

“Revisiting the cooperative plan will be a great reminder of why people love this river and how they planned to protect it as we kick off our new project: Shoreland Protection for the Lower St. Croix River,” said Natalie Warren, River Corridor Steward at the St. Croix River Association. SCRA is working with citizens through community partnerships and grassroots efforts to increase awareness of wild and scenic attributes in the lower riverway.

Local citizens, river users, government officials, business-owners, realtors, developers, and any other interested parties are encouraged to attend the meeting. Visit www.stcroixriverassociation.org for more information. The Cooperative Management Plan is available for review online: http://www.rivers.gov/documents/plans/lower-st-croix-plan.pdf.

Story of 360

One of the biggest challenges facing the St. Croix River is harmful blooms of algae in in the lower river, due to excess nutrients in runoff. The goal is to restore the river by reducing phosphorus levels to 360 tons/year. Learn more »
