Conversations of the Valley, the long-running speaker series hosted by the St. Croix Valley Foundation, brings a slate of experts and thought leaders to the Zoom format. The theme for this season’s presentations is “Racial Justice: Listening and Learning.”

A reckoning on race relations is how many in the media have characterized events and responses that people have experienced or witnessed in the past year. Conversations of the Valley aims to take what can sometimes seem like far off voices in the national media and bring those voices closer to home.

There will be no fees for any of the presentations. The next presentation takes place January 20, 2021.

“What Happened in this Region to Create the Disparities that Black Americans Continue to Experience Today?”

Featuring Bill Green, Ph.D., J.D., Professor, Augsburg University

Wed. Jan 20, 2021, 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
(NOTE: This is a change from usually scheduled noon events – in order to avoid overlap with the live coverage of the Jan 20th Presidential oath of office, inauguration and inaugural address.)

Bill Green is a professor of history, Augsburg University with an M.A., Ph.D. and J.D. from University of Minnesota. He has published numerous articles and books, notably regarding Minnesota history and civil rights. His “The Origin of Civil Rights in Minnesota, 1865-1914” won the 2015 Minnesota Book Award/Hognander Prize. Bill is a Council Member Emeritus of the Minnesota Historical Society.

Future presentations:

“Travelways of the Dakota People in the St. Croix River Valley”

Gwen Westerman, Ph.D., Artist, Poet, Historian and Teacher

Wed. Mar 17, 2021, 12 noon – 1:00 pm

“Eliminating the Power of Racial Stereotypes Through Authentic Relationships”

Alexs D. Pate, Author, President/CEO of Innocent Technologies

Conversations of the Valley is a community speaker series (that has been informing and inspiring since 2004) with the purpose of bringing community members together to address issues relevant to the St. Croix Valley region. By talking about issues, discussing them and asking questions, community members gain insights which often lead to meaningful action.

Conversations of the Valley is hosted by the St. Croix Valley Foundation with generous support from First State Bank & Trust.
