Classes for young children to learn about and explore the St. Croix River and its watershed, and create art based on what they learn, are being offered at The Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson.

Just Add Water: Tiny Drops, for ages 3 through 5, and Just Add Water: Jump In, for ages 4 and older, will be taught by Liz Malanaphy, co-director of Hudson’s popular Destination Imagination program. According to The Phipps, “These hands-on classes are designed to encourage young children to actively explore the science of the world around them, especially the St. Croix River and its watershed.  Students will observe, engage, and celebrate the natural world each class session, and will create individual and collaborative works of art based on the world around them.”

9:00 – 11:00 a.m., Tuesday & Thursday
Fall session: September 16 – October 16
Winter session: January 27 – February 26
Spring session: April 21 – May 21
$139 per session
Class size limited to 8 students

Malaphany says: “The class will feature the St. Croix river as a focus for every class session, and we will be outside for a portion of each class. Each session will be different, because of the beautiful seasons we experience here along the river. I am always working to find ways to engage and inspire kids in exploration of the natural world around them. And I love to follow the lead of the kids in each class, in terms of what they are most interested in learning about! We are scientists and artists in the Just Add Water classes; using art to communicate what we learn about the world around us (in this case the St. Croix River).”

Story of 360

One of the biggest challenges facing the St. Croix River is harmful blooms of algae in in the lower river, due to excess nutrients in runoff. The goal is to restore the river by reducing phosphorus levels to 360 tons/year. Learn more »
