Participants in the 2011 program.

Teachers are invited to become students for three days this summer as part of Hamline University’s “Rivers Institute.” The seminars give K-12 educators the opportunity to learn how to teach about the river, and how to use the river to teach. And yes, there will be canoeing.

It doesn’t sound like there will be much indoor time at all as participants spend most of the workshops out on or around the river, learning particularly about science and engineering:

Each summer, Hamline University’s Center for Global Environmental Education presents its acclaimed Rivers Institute, a three day field-based professional development opportunity that helps area educators improve their students’ literacy, engineering skills and science knowledge through the lens of watershed education. Two institutes will be held this summer—one on the St. Croix River, and one on the Mississippi River.

  • St. Croix River Institute
    June 25-27, 2012 (Monday-Wednesday)
  • Mississippi River Institute
    July 23-25, 2012 (Monday-Wednesday)

The program’s website explains more about what the course will entail:

Rivers Institutes take place over three days, with pre- and post-course components. Participants interact directly with professionals working on the river to investigate how concepts taught and experienced in the field can be directly transferred to classroom practice. Core concepts in science, engineering and literacy will be explored, as well as strategies for integrating curriculum using the river as a context for learning.

The workshops are no-cost for participants, thanks to support from the 3M Foundation, Andersen Corporate Foundation, Beim Foundation, Patrick and Aimee Butler Family Foundation, Medtronic Foundation, Minnehaha Creek Watershed District and Xcel Energy Foundation.
