Middle Eau Claire Lake
Bayfield County – Barnes, WI

Gordon MacQuarrie died in November of 1956, after a quarter century of exceptional writing in the field of outdoor journalism. As the outdoor writer for the Superior Evening Telegram and later the Milwaukee Journal, his stories were truly loved by thousands. He also wrote freelance for national hunting and fishing magazines like Outdoor Life, Field and Stream, and Sports Afield.

He and his father William built their original lake shack in 1916, a century ago, on the northwest shore of Middle Eau Claire Lake in southwestern Bayfield County (in the far upper reaches of the St. Croix River watershed). There he hunted and fished and immersed himself in the Northwoods. His stories were more about the ‘journey‘ rather than the ‘destination‘, and his cabin became, the Headquarters of the Old Duck Hunters Association, the ODHA. The place was rebuilt in 1936, after Mac was hired by the Milwaukee Journal.

We will visit the MacQuarrie Room at a brand new community museum, take a pontoon tour of his lake, take a stroll on the ODHA site, and take two tours visiting places you’ve read about in his stories. Two Dinners (walleye and BBQ beef) two hearty breakfasts, a wild rice soup & sand lunch, and a evening MacQuarrie program on Friday with treats will be on our menu.

The Buck N Bass Resort, an old MacQuarrie haunt from years ago, is hosting our event, and serving four great meals. BnB is located just across the bay from the ODHA property, Mac’s home base where he was inspired to write his great stories. BnB has four cabins available at the present time and other lodging is available nearby. Event will be filmed by Outdoor Wisconsin.
