The third-annual St. Croix Fat Cat Triathlon is being held in Scandia and Marine on St. Croix on July 9th. The popular competition starts with a four-mile paddle from Log House Landing to William O’Brien State Park. Classes include single and solo paddlers in canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards.

After the river, racers will run five-and-a-half miles, and climb more than 300 feet, through the state park to Lions Park in Scandia, adjacent to this historic Hay Lake School. The final leg sends bicyclists along 11 miles of beautiful back roads, much of the route following the shores of Big Marine Lake.

At the Lions Park finish line, in addition to the awards, there will be catfish to eat, beverages, and live music.

On Facebook, race organizers listed several changes from last year:

  • More water stops and a water tank at T2
  • First responder on site at Lions Park
  • More volunteers & marking on bike route
  • Two shuttle buses on rotation
  • More organized start area with best efforts to get personal watercraft out first

Registration fees range from $60 for one member of a three-person team, to $84 for a solo individual. It includes a pasta dinner the night before, t-shirt, and post-race snacks. Boat rentals are available. All funds are given back to the community through the Scandia-Marine Lions Club, the organizers of the event. Numerous local businesses have also offered sponsorship support.
