I love the St. Croix River and all the waters and lands connected to it and I’m passionate about trying to protect, restore, and celebrate our beautiful neighbor. I’m lucky enough to say this is my day job, as I work for the St. Croix River Association, but there is always more I can do. This is one of the reasons I’m pushing to start a local chapter of the League of Women Voters Wisconsin (LWV WI), which will carry the river’s name “Upper St. Croix,” serving both Polk and Burnett counties.

The League “advocates for the strongest water protection and restoration positions possible.” They rallied against the iron ore mine in Penokee Hills and they fight to protect the watershed from phosphorus pollution at any level. Building a local chapter of the LWV WI would bring so much value to our fight to protect, restore, and ensure celebration of the St. Croix and its watershed for years to come.

There will be an informational meeting about forming this new chapter of the LWV WI on Tuesday April 22, 2014 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the St. Croix Falls Public Library.

Ladies and gentlemen alike, please join me, along with the executive director of the LWV WI, Andrea Kaminski, for an enlightening discussion about the new opportunities for environmental stewardship through the future chapter of the League of Women Voters.

Position on water

Here is more information on the LWV WI’s position: “We hold a vision of life where prudent management of water resources leads to sustainable use, where consumption does not exceed the environment’s ability to replenish and to protect itself, and where its quality and quantity is such that all native aquatic species thrive. All current and future generations of stakeholders in Wisconsin shall enjoy the benefits of equal access to natural sources of clean, fresh water.”

The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin is a nonpartisan political organization that advocate for informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influence public policy through education and advocacy. The LWV WI is working to: protect and engage voters, reform money in politics, defend the environment, reform immigration, fix fiscal policy, advance health care, and improve government.
