Update 3/12/2014: Mondale’s appearance has been cancelled.

The Washington County Historical Society is excited to announce former Vice President of the United States, US Senator and US Ambassador to Japan, Walter Mondale, will be the featured speaker at the Washington County Historical Society Annual meeting on Thursday March 27, 2014 at the Water Street Inn in Stillwater.

Mondale was born in Ceylon, Minnesota, and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1951. He then served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War before earning a law degree in 1956. He married Joan Adams in 1955.

Working as a lawyer in Minneapolis, Mondale was elected to the position of attorney general in 1960. He was appointed U.S. Senator in late 1964 as a member of the Democratic Party upon the resignation of Hubert Humphrey, and held that post until 1976.

In working with Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, Mondale helped to draft legislation to protect and preserve the wild and scenic rivers in the US. Among those first protected rivers is the St. Croix River between Minnesota and Wisconsin. (Read an interview with Mondale about the St. Croix here.)

The event is open to the public and the cost is $25 for WCHS members and $35 for nonmembers.

The evening will begin at 5:30 with a social hour, dinner at 6:30 and the business meeting will be at 7:30. Mr. Mondale’s program will begin around 8pm.
