The St. Croix Watershed Research Station announces an upcoming presentation from two of the 2013 Artists at Pine Needles, poet Su Smallen and artist Jessica Zeglin.

The poetry reading and artist’s talk will be Friday evening, November 15, 2013 at the Research Station, 16910 152nd Street North, Marine on St. Croix. The event will begin at 7:00 p.m. It is open to the public but space is limited and registration is required.

This workshop is presented by the St. Croix Watershed Research Station as part of its Artist at Pine Needles residency program. Each summer, the Artist at Pine Needles program invites natural history artists or writers to spend 2 to 4 weeks in residence to immerse themselves in a field experience, gather resource materials, and interact with environmental scientists and the local community.

During Smallen’s residency in the month of July, she wrote an entire book of new poems; she will read selections from that work.

Painter and sculptor Jessica Zeglin, in residence in September, collected images and objects on which she is basing a new body of work in her studio. Jessica will show and discuss both previous works and the new images she is developing based upon her residency.

Su Smallen is the author of Buddha, Proof, a Minnesota Book Award Finalist, and Weight of Light, nominated for the Pushcart Press Editor’s Book Award. Other honors include the Jane Kenyon Prize. She was a founding member of the Laurel Poetry Collective, publishing books and broadsides for ten years. Formerly a professional choreographer and dancer, Su and her poetry were featured in the documentary dance film Klatch. 

Jessica Zeglin has a B.A. in Visual Art and an M.S. in Public Health from the University of Minnesota. She has participated in multiple group and individual shows in area galleries. She says about her art, “My paintings and sculpture magnify small objects and creatures into larger-than-life representations of themselves. Using jewel toned colors, strong line, and central figure composition I seek to present the images of these creatures directly to viewers, asking them to engage with the reality of the creatures themselves as important, vibrant parts of our world.”
