Photo gallery: Recipe for solitude on the St. Croix River

It was quiet and cold and beautiful on the river upstream of William O’Brien State Park one day last week.

St. Croix River solitude recipe

An old friend and a new friend canoed the river with me on Wednesday. The sun came and went, as did the wind. The water was lower than I’ve ever seen it — forcing me to get out and drag and push the canoe off sandbars a few times. I was glad I had my rubber boots along.

We didn’t see another canoe or boat on the river, but we did see several bald eagles. The leaf colors were still lovely, and we also scrambled up a bluff to check out a cave I had never noticed before.
