This fall, two art exhibits will feature work by artists who participated in the St. Croix Watershed Research Station of the Science Museum of Minnesota’s unique Artist at Pine Needles Program. Since 2002, 27 artists and writers have taken part in the residency program, which explores connections between science and art.

The Research Station invites artists or writers to spend two to four weeks at the historic cabin perched on the river banks near Marine on St. Croix. Participants can “immerse themselves in a field experience, gather resource materials, and interact with environmental scientists and the local community.”

St. Croix Riverway Visitor Center

The first show opens this weekend at the Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway Visitor Center in St. Croix Falls. It is open to the public everyday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until October 7.

The show will feature 25 pieces of artwork, including “paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, collages and sculpture which were created during or after the artists’ stay along the St. Croix River.”

University of Minnesota

Photographer David Luke was a Pine Needles resident in the summer of 2011. He produced a collection of work titled “Food and Water,” which he says consists of works “representing food, in the form of agricultural landscapes, and water, in the form of the St. Croix River.”

Luke is participating in a two-artist show this October and November at Coffman Memorial Union on the University of Minnesota campus. The show runs October 11 to November 30, with an opening reception on October 19.
