Via the Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway:

Join insect experts and enthusiasts for an afternoon of exploration as we discover the insects that call Minnesota Interstate State Park home. This first-ever bioblitz along the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway is sponsored by the National Park Service, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and the Bell Museum of Natural History. The 2015 BioBlitz will be held from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm on June 27.

So what is a bioblitz anyway? Biologists lead an intensive survey to count as many species as possible in a particular area within a set time frame. Citizen scientists can help! Because this is the first effort along the St. Croix River, the BioBlitz will focus on insects only. Guided walks will happen throughout the afternoon and the experts will assist participants catching and identifying insect species.

Schedule of Activities

• 1:00 pm: Join Joel Gardner from the University of Minnesota Bee Lab. Walk the Railroad Trail to look for bees and other insects.
• 2:00 pm: Ron Lawrenz, Director of the Warner Nature Center, will lead a foray looking for dragonflies on the River Trail.
• 3:00 pm: Joel Gardner will lead a second foray looking for bees on the Picnic Grounds.
• 4:00 pm: Join Val Cervenka of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources on the Railroad Trail. She specializes in beetles.

Throughout the afternoon: The Bell Museum of Natural History will display insect collections at the Picnic Grounds. Learn how to pin insects for collections.

This event will take place at the Picnic Area (southern entrance) of Minnesota Interstate State Park. A vehicle sticker is required to enter the state park. Come prepared to spend the afternoon outdoors by bringing sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of drinking water. A list of insects found will be posted here.
