St-Croix-Fat-Cat-logoSaturday was the first St. Croix Fat Cat Triathalon in Scandia, which included a 3.8-mile paddle down the river. Racers also ran 5.2 miles through William O’Brien State Park, and biked 11 miles along rural roads and trails in Scandia.

Presented by the Scandia-Marine on St. Croix Lions Club, the event was reportedly a success before it even started, with double the expected number of registrations. According to the Country Messenger, organizers were hoping for at least 50 participants and had about a hundred. It was also a featured event on the first day of River Awareness Week.

Competitors could work as individuals, or relay team of two or three people. Results are available here, with top showings for racers from Marine on St. Croix, Osceola, Stillwater, and other St. Croix Valley communities.

A website update after the race indicated that organizers are planning a second event next year.
