In its twenty-first year, the St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour is being recognized as one of the best of its kind in America. The tour starts today and runs through Sunday, with seven studios hosting 50 potters from 15 states (and Scotland).

In addition to the chance to buy pottery right from the artists, some of the studios will also offer the opportunity to check out a kiln and eat right from the handmade works.

A recent Pioneer Press article explored why the tour has become such a big deal. Potter Guillermo Cuellar, who moved to the area from Venezuela in 2005, explained:

“This area is known internationally for pottery,” he said. “There’s such a richness and diversity of work that’s being made here, it’s like a Mecca. I had people from 24 different states come to my studio on the last tour.

“I’m reaping all the benefits of what these other people have created, which is one of the premiere pottery events in the country. It’s really that big of deal. I’m just happy to be a part of it now.”

The tour’s website has more about what to expect:

Using our map, you can drive through the spring landscape of the Saint Croix River Valley. At each studio you will find useful and distinctive pottery. Visit one, or all of the studios during this three-day, self-guided event. Bring friends to share the day with you.

These Minnesota potters have earned a national reputation for quality and integrity. Each potter’s work has a distinct character, is durable and intended for everyday use. From small cups and bowls to large pieces suitable for display, an intriguing range of pottery will be available. You will find earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain for use in cooking and serving, decorating and display.

I have the ad from Spaces mag for the take. Me to the River. Can you tell me the artist that made the blue pots in the upper right hand corner of the ad?

I have forwarded your question to ArtReach St. Croix, the organization responsible for Take Me To the River. They should be able to answer your question.
