Fishin' for Parkinson's logoThe “Fishin’ for Parkinson’s”  fishing tournament on the river September 10 isn’t just about catching the biggest fish or raising money for a good cause. It’s also about doing physical activity, one of the key components to treating the disease.

The tournament honors Dr. Terrance Capistrant, who specialized in treating Parkinson’s during his career, and was diagnosed with it after retiring. Event proceeds will go to the Capistrant Center for Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders at Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul. Last year’s inaugural event raised $18,000 for the Center; organizer Christopher Barr said they are hoping to increase that “tenfold” this year.

Dr. Capistrant’s son, Terrance Capistrant, says that an event on the St. Croix was a natural way to support the Center, as the St. Croix has been a big part of his family’s life. “Our family has spent all of our lives recreating on the river, supporting businesses as well as Dr. Capistrant treating literally hundreds of patients residing on or around the river,” he wrote in an e-mail.

The September 10 tournament and other festivities will center around Lakeside Park in Bayport. In addition to the fishing competition, there will be activities for kids on shore, and a benefit BBQ dinner that night.

The cost to join the fishing tournament is $250 per two-person team. The benefit dinner is $75 per adult and $25 per child. It is also possible to sponsor a team or make a cash donation to help support the Capistrant Center.
